As cruise lines continue to build more, bigger ships, the cruise lines are continually looking for various ports to utilize on cruises. As pert of this expansion, Canada is growing in popularity. Charlottetown, located on Prince Edward Island has seen a jump in passenger arrivals from 2018 to 2019 and is set for another jump in 2020.

The Prince Edward Island port welcomed 120,000 cruise passengers in 2019 and expects a 40% increase in 2020 (approx 168,000 visitors). Charlottetown has about 36,100 full time residents. Since the port is growing in popularity in the Spring, Summer and Fall, the impact to the local residents is spread out over an extended season.

Clemence pointed to growth is from existing partners and the attraction of new ones.

The port has seen growth via ship calls, from all of our visiting lines, including but not limited to Holland America, Princess, and Norwegian, but is now seeing new lines and new ships entering the region. Ship visiting are varying in size from smaller luxury lines – like Scenic Cruises with the Scenic Eclipse – to large lines with much larger vessels, like the MSC Meraviglia.

The town has the best of both worlds, the charm and connection with the sea of New England/Canada with rugged shorelines, nature and lighthouses plus a quaint town with shops, stores and restaurants.
