I found this great video of Holland America Line’s Rotterdam of 1959. Constructed at the Rotterdam Drydock Company at Rotterdam in the Netherland,   the ship was delivered 1 year after her sister ship   Statendam was delivered for Holland America. The profiles of the two ships are dramatically different – with the Statendam having a more traditional form and the Rotterdam having a more modern appearance. On September 13, 1958, the 38,645 ton Rotterdam was launched and christened by   Queen Juliana of the Netherlands with the shoreline flanked with thousands of onlookers.  With 1,456 passengers double occupancy and a crew of 776, the 748 feet long; 94.1 feet wide; 29.6 ft draft and a cruising speed of 21.5 knots, the twin funnel liner looked majestic. Charlottetown Prince Edward Island Offers Natural Beauty and Shopping Popular with Cruise Passengers As cruise lines continue to build more, bigger ships, the cruise lines are continually looking for various ports to utilize on cruises. As pert of this expansion, Canada is growing in popularity. Charlottetown, located on Prince Edward Island has seen a jump in passenger arrivals from 2018 to 2019 and is set for another jump in 2020. The Prince Edward Island port welcomed 120,000 cruise passengers in 2019 and expects a 40% increase in 2020 (approx 168,000 visitors). Charlottetown has about 36,100 full time residents. Since the port is growing in popularity in the Spring, Summer and Fall, the impact to the local residents is spread out over an extended season. Holland America's  Upscale Prinsendam to Leave Fleet in July 2019 From the post on Tuesday, we covered that Holland America has substantially changed their 2019 New England Canada cruises, swapping out ships and reducing sailings. On Monday Holland America announced the sale of their high end ship Prinsendam to Germany's Phoenix Reisen. The ship is expected to transfer to her new owners in July 2019.  Prinsendam ’s itineraries from July 1, 2019, onward are scheduled to be assimilated by Rotterdam, Volendam and Veendam. Holland America's Zaandam Will Sail From Boston 2019 - New York Sailings Reduced. In a surprise move Holland America has decided to deploy the Zaandam on 2019 Spring/Summer New England. Canada cruises from Boston. The Zaandam is larger than the prior ship deployed on the route measuring in at 61,398 tons and carries 1,432 passengers (double occupancy) and a crew of 610. The Zaandam will be joined by the Veendam and Rotterdam that will sail from Boston in the fall of 2019. The New York sailings has been cut back to 1 ship and 1 sailing. The Zuiderdam will make a 10-Day, one way voyage between New York and Quebec Canada on September 9th, 2019.
