No Royal Caribbean Oasis Class for New York In the Near Future

Image
Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas Too Large to Fit Under the Verrazaro Bridge? It appears that the port of New York will not see a Royal Caribbean Oasis Class ship anytime soon. It appears that the ships are too tall to pass under the Verrazaro - Narrows bridge. The height of the 220,000+ ton ship is 236 feet tall and the clearance under the bridge is only 228 feet. The ship might be able to enter the port if the funnels are equipped with a hinge that will allow the funnels and mast to clear the bridge. This "hinge" is not unusual and can be found on other ships as seen in the photo below on the Norwegian Wind. Norwegian Wind - Hinged funnel (Courtesy Wikipedia) This also explains why Royal Caribbean was lobbying to build a cruise port in Staten Island on the Atlantic Ocean side of the bridge. That plan was under consideration, before they entered into an agreement with Bayonne for the Cape Liberty Cruise Port - located in Bayonne, New Jersey. Only time

Sluggish Chinese Market May See Cruise Ships Relocated to New York, US and European Ports.

Image
Norwegian Joy Removed From Chinese Market to US West Coast, Mexico and Alaska. Just this week, Norwegian Cruise Line announced that the Norwegian Joy - a ship built specifically for the Chinese Market, will be relocated to the United States West Coast, Mexico and Alaska in 2019. A sluggish Chinese cruise market has many operators considering moving ships from the region.  Earlier this year, another Chinese operator - SkySea Cruises will cease operations and their ship will be moved to TUI Cruises' German Mein Schiff Brand. It is expected that other operators will rationalize their Chinese operations and ships will be moved to markets where the demand is higher. Cruise Port: Cape Canaveral, Florida - Popular Cruise Destination

Image
Space Coast Beach - Jetty Park - Cape Canaveral Cruise Port Destination. Cape Canaveral is a very popular cruise port on sailings from the port of New York and New Jersey. The port does have allot to offer day passengers (depending on the length of the stay). There are cruise line shore excursions / day trips (at an extra cost) to the theme parks including Universal Studios, Disney and more. The NASA Space center tour is not far from the port and a great way to spend the day.  There is a visit to Coco Beach to shop and pick up souvenirs. Also there is a state park (Jetty Park), not far from the cruise port (short walk or cab ride depending on  where the ship docks),  for swimming in the warm Florida waters. In addition to the normal sites and attractions, there are always a number of festivals, street fairs and parades to offer visitors something unique to see or do. St. Thomas - A Popular Cruise Port on Winter Sailings From New York

Image
Beautiful Beaches of St. Thomas - A popular Cruise Port on Cruises Departing from New York / New Jersey. When winter rolls around and cruise ships need to go deeper into the Caribbean to offer passengers warm water ports - St. Thomas becomes a popular destination. The Eastern Caribbean port offers cruise passengers, shopping, crystal clear wat er, beautiful beaches, photo opportunities and much, much more. Some must see things when visitng St. Thomas include Megan's Bay, St Thomas Skyride, Snorkeling and with many popular shops and retail stores shopping. St. Thomas definitely has something to offer any cruise passenger. The only drawback to St. Thomas is that it is so popular with the cruise lines that it is possible for 5 or 6 large ships to be in port simultaneously - dropping off some 30,000 passengers at once.  Traffic can potentially be an issue especially To/From the cruise terminal. Following Up on Yesterday's Post - Peacboat.org's New Sail Assist Powered Ship

Image
Peaceboat's New Ship - EcoShip - Partially Sail powered Now in the last stages of planning, the "Ecoship" will be built by Finland's Arctech. It will cost about $500 million, financed in part by impact investors -- funds, rich families and individuals who want to use their cash to improve the world as well as make a profit.  "Ecoship was a dream for me," said Peace Boat founder Yoshioka Tatsuya. "Using a conventional ship was frustrating for us, even though we tried our best to reduce the emissions." A conventional cruise ship can burn hundreds of tons of heavy fuel oil a day and emit as much particulate matter as a million cars, according to German environmental group NABU. The "Ecoship" will be fueled by a much cleaner combination of solar panels, wind power and liquid natural gas, and should produce 40% less carbon dioxide than a traditional cruise ship. "We will have 10 sails, so it will use the wind

Cruise Ships Increase Speed in Order to Get Ahead of Hurricane.

Image
Norwegian Escape - Norwegian Cruise Lines Sails for Bermuda Today (Sunday) the Norwegian Escape and Celebrity Summit departed New York / Cape Liberty, NJ destined for Bermuda. Although both ships left their pier on time, the ships appeared to be traveling at an unusually faster speed than normal. While watching the evening news, the weather person mentioned that tropical storm Chris has the potential to become a hurricane within the next day and is located off the coast of North Carolina. It appears the both ships were speeding up to get ahead of the storm and have the storm pass behind them. It was an absolutely beautiful day in New York today with a temperature of 90 degrees and low humidity and the weather conditions were ideal for a departure.
