Off topic, In an effort to replace its aging fleet - the New York City Department of Transportation has ordered 3 new Staten Island Ferries.  Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc., Panama City, Fla reports that its Allanton shipyard last launched the SSG Michael H. Olli s, the first of three 320 ft Ollis Class ferries for the Staten Island Ferry Division of New York City’s Department of Transportation (NYCDOT). The launch took place in November 2019. The ferry is named for Staten Island native Army Staff Sgt. Michael H. Ollis, who was killed in Afghanistan on August 28, 2013, when he stepped into the path of a Polish officer, blocking him from the suicide vest of an insurgent who had raided Forward Operating Base Ghazni. Princess Cruise Sun Princess (left) and Peaceboat's Ocean Dream (right) in NYC This weekend saw 2 unique visitors to New York, Each ship offered extended, multi-day stays in the Big Apple. First was Princess Cruises Sun Princess arriving in New York Friday Night as part of her World Cruise. Passengers were treated to two glorious days in New York. The Weather was perfect - Sunny, dry and clear making the stay enjoyable. The second ship was  the Japanese chartered Ocean Dream (aka the Peaceboat) also spent 2 days in New York bringing tourist to New York on a mission of peace and goodwill.  The Peaceboat began her career as Carnival Cruises' first new ship - the Tropicale. Both ships stayed very late, providing passengers the opportunity to enjoy an extended stay in NYC. There will be welcoming festivities including an official naming session for the ship. The Carnival Sunrise was previously the Carnival Triumph which was totally renovated and re-emerged as the Carnival Sunrise. After spending approximately $200 Million dollars on the ships refurbishment - she is very much a new ship. Phoenix Reisen's Amadea Making a Call in New York as part of a world cruise. Phoenix Reisen's Amadea is heading to New York for a May 1st arrival. The Amadea is traveling on an around the world cruise for the German cruise operator.  The Amadea will spend overnight in New York before heading toward New England, Canada and then a transatlantic voyage to Germany. The Amadea previously operated as NYK Cruise Line's Asuka and is now been operating for mid-ship cruise operator for approximately 13 years. The Amadea measures 633 feet in length, carries 624 passengers and weighs 28,856 tons. The Amadea caters primarily to German speaking passengers. Carnival Triumph to be Christened as the Carnival Sunrise in NYC in May. As Carnival Sunrise makes her debut following her $200 million transformation, Carnival Cruise Line announced today that Kelly Arison, daughter of Carnival Corporation Chairman Micky Arison and his wife Madeleine, will serve as godmother for the ship at an invitation-only ceremony in New York on May 23. In what is sure to be a touching moment, Kelly will step into the godmother role previously held by her mother when the ship first entered service as Carnival Triumph, in 1999. Transformation of the Carnival Triumph, now Carnival Sunrise, has completed in Cadiz Spain. The transformed Carnival Triumph has left the shipyard in Cadiz Spain late Friday (4/19/19). Norwegian Getaway Arrives in New York For a Series of Bermuda and Florida/Bahama Cruises. This morning Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Getaway is expected to arrive in New York at around 9:00 AM. She departed Miami on 4/7/2019 with no passengers en-route to NYC. The ship has not been in New York since its maiden voyage in January / February 2014.. The Norwegian Getaway will conduct a four day cruise to Bermuda and also a seven day Florida -Bahamas Cruise from New York, before re-positioning to Europe for the summer season. Norwegian is bringing a series of their ships to New York this fall. Including the Norwegian Jade which will have a single sailing from Brooklyn. As well as the Norwegian Pearl. Norwegian Escape in New York Harbor. Due to the size of the ships today, and the amount of supplies and luggage associated with large ships, ships normally arrive in New York / New Jersey between 1:30 AM and 5:00 AM. The ships are docked and luggage is already on the pier before the sun comes up. The Norwegian Escape's arrival today found the ship just off of mid-town Manhattan at 7:15 AM. It was a mild, clear, sunny morning and the large ship provided a treat to early morning risers along the iver's edge. Due to the hard-work of the crew, the ship was able to offload 4,000+ disembarking passengers and embark 4,000+ new vacation goers and still depart New York on time at 4 PM. Hats off to the crew! Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Escape Delayed Dur to Fueling Issues Sunday (yesterday) was a unique day in New York with scattered thunderstorms and frequent breaks of sunshine, bright blue skies and fluffy clouds. During the key departure hour (4 PM) the Celebrity Summit actually departed a little early leaving at 3:50 PM under bright sunshine. I was anxiously awaiting the departure of the Norwegian Escape at 4 PM but at 5 PM I was still waiting. It appears that the re-fueling of the ship for her 7 day cruise to Bermuda was running drastically behind. Refueling usually takes 4-6 hours.  It was not until about 7:50 PM where the Norwegian Escape pulled away from the pier and headed down the Hudson River. The departure delay is NOT expected to impact the ship's schedule since 2 days are allowed for the 1 - 1.5 day trip to Bermuda. Refueling delays are not common and I can say I was disappointed because the 4 hour delay was too long to stay to see the ship depart. C...
