Norwegian Encore - One of Many Ships which were expected to sail from New York this past weekend. This past weekend had the potential to be a very busy cruise weekend - but due to the Coronavirus- mother-nature had different plans. On July 1st Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas was scheduled to depart Cape Liberty, Bayonne  on a 9-day Bermuda / Eastern Caribbean Cruise. On July 2nd the Carnival Sunrise was scheduled to depart Manhattan for a 4 day cruise to Bermuda. On July 4th Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Pearl and Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas were both headed to Florida and the Bahamas. On July 5th Celebrity Cruise' Celebrity Summit was slated to depart on a Bermuda & Newport RI cruise while the Norwegian Encore was scheduled for a 7 Day Bermuda Cruise. Manhattan Cruise Terminal Minus the Cruise Ships Due to The Pause In Operations. This past weekend was a great weekend in New York City. The weather was beautiful, the sun was shining and the temperature was warm. On Saturday, I made my way over to the Hudson River and was saddened to see the cruise ship piers in Manhattan empty. On a normal Saturday a Norwegian Cruise Line ship would have been tied up - loading passengers for a cruise to either Florida and the Bahamas or New England & Canada. In Bayonne, Cape Liberty, a Royal Caribbean ship would have been embarking on as sailing to the same ports - Florida / Bahamas or New England / Canada or Bermuda and the Caribbean. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal may have been playing host to the Queen Mary 2 preparing to sail to Southampton, England on a transatlantic voyage. Unfortunately none of the above was to be found. Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas - To Sail From New York in 2021. Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is expected to sail from Cape Liberty Bayonne, New Jersey in 2021. It is unclear at this time, if a portion of her 2020 cruise season from Bayonne will occur, but 2021 is looking promising. The Oasis of the Seas' New York arrival will represent the first time one of the Oasis class ship have pulled into the port. To date all Oasis class ship have avoided  the Port of New York as it was suspected the Oasis class ships may be too tall to slip beneath the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The Bridge's clearance is listed as 228 Feet. The  Oasis of the Seas measures 225,282 tons, is 1,187 feet long, 208 feet wide and requires an air clearance of 208 feet.. The largest passenger ship to call in the port to date is MSC Cruises' MSC Meravilgia weighing in at 171,598 GT, 1,036 feet long and 141 feet wide. Hurricane Dorian approaches Bahamas and Florida (Map CNN) Hurricane Dorian has had limited impact on cruises departing from New York, mainly because we are in the late summer/fall season.  At this time of the year, cruises ships from New York tend to head north to New England and Canada for cruise passengers to enjoy the splendor of the fall colors. Celebrity Summit - Sails from New York to New England & Canada  and/or Bermuda Sunday was a busy morning in the port of New York and New Jersey with three cruise ships, 2 military ships and 3 container ships arriving in the wee hours of the morning. The Norwegian Escape arrived from a week long sailing to Bermuda, Her arrival time was about 4:30 AM at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Arriving at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at around 6:00 AM was Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 returning from a New England, Canada Cruise. Finally the Celebrity Summit was slightly delayed with her arrival at Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal,  Bayonne, New Jersey - pulling along side around 7:15 AM. The ship was arriving from a 7 Day Cruise to Bermuda. The Celebrity Summit was delayed due to the arrival of the USNS Watkins which was being eased into the dry-dock at the Bayonne Drydock and Repair facility located at the end of the Cape Liberty Peninsular. This past Sunday (9/24), the Port of New York and New Jersey played host to 5 cruise ships. The attraction of fall foliage and New England / Canada cruises has ships from all over the globe congregating in New York. Many European Cruise Lines like AIDA and P&O focus on specific demographics. P&O on the British market and cruise passengers, while AIDA focuses on German cruise passengers. These ships usually spend at least overnight stay in the Big Apple to offer passengers time to explore the city. AIDA Cruises AIDAvita - One of a number of German cruise lines offering extended stays in New York on their New England, Canada Cruises. As stated in previous blog posts, as the fall approaches, many cruise lines re-locate their ships to New York to Sail on New England Canada Cruises.  These fall sailing are very popular among the German Cruise lines like AIDA and Mein Schiff (TUI Cruises) which use New York / New Jersey as a turn around port. Their cruises use New York as a embarkation and disembarkation port allowing passenger time to visit and explore the Big Apple. Space Coast Beach - Jetty Park - Cape Canaveral Cruise Port Destination. Cape Canaveral is a very popular cruise port on sailings from the port of New York and New Jersey. The port does have allot to offer day passengers (depending on the length of the stay). There are cruise line shore excursions / day trips (at an extra cost) to the theme parks including Universal Studios, Disney and more. The NASA Space center tour is not far from the port and a great way to spend the day.  There is a visit to Coco Beach to shop and pick up souvenirs.
