Saga Cruises Spirit of Discovery Made Her Maiden Call in New York City Saga Cruises' New Spirit of  Discovery made a post Christmas visit to New York on December 27th - providing her British passengers an overnight stay in the Big Apple. The Spirit of Discovery was delivered in the June of 2019 and is a smaller ship weighing just under 50,000 tons and carrying approximately 1,000 passengers. Saga Cruises' specializes in vacations for those 50 years of old or over. The Spirit of Discovery headed to Bermuda and will spend New Year's Eve in Bermuda, before heading back to Southampton England - arriving on January 9, 2020. She departed from Southampton on December 5, 2019 and headed to the Portugal, the Caribbean and up the US east coast to Key West, Port Canaveral,  Norfolk and New York. Norwegian Cruise Lines' Norwegian Gem During Favorable Weather Conditions 2/25/2019 - Today Norwegian Cruise Lines' Norwegian Gem was denied entry into the port of New York and New Jersey today due to extremely high winds. Although the day was bright and sunny the wind gusts were up to 60 miles per hour. The Norwegian Gem sailed under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge ( Verrazano - Narrows Bridge) but was denied further entry into the port by the harbor master. The excessive winds, combined with the challenging currents made maneuvering the 93,530 ton ship up the Hudson River and making the right hand turn into the pier practically impossible. The Norwegian Gem then turned around off the shore of Staten Island and sailed out of the harbor extending passengers vacation another day. Norwegian Joy Removed From Chinese Market to US West Coast, Mexico and Alaska. Just this week, Norwegian Cruise Line announced that the Norwegian Joy - a ship built specifically for the Chinese Market, will be relocated to the United States West Coast, Mexico and Alaska in 2019. A sluggish Chinese cruise market has many operators considering moving ships from the region.  Earlier this year, another Chinese operator - SkySea Cruises will cease operations and their ship will be moved to TUI Cruises' German Mein Schiff Brand. In a surprise move, Carnival Cruises will replace the Carnival Horizon with the Carnival Triumph in 2019 sailing from New York. Holland America's  Upscale Prinsendam to Leave Fleet in July 2019 From the post on Tuesday, we covered that Holland America has substantially changed their 2019 New England Canada cruises, swapping out ships and reducing sailings. On Monday Holland America announced the sale of their high end ship Prinsendam to Germany's Phoenix Reisen. The ship is expected to transfer to her new owners in July 2019.  Prinsendam ’s itineraries from July 1, 2019, onward are scheduled to be assimilated by Rotterdam, Volendam and Veendam. Holland America's Zaandam Will Sail From Boston 2019 - New York Sailings Reduced. In a surprise move Holland America has decided to deploy the Zaandam on 2019 Spring/Summer New England.
