Norwegian Cruise Lines Move Ships to Distant shores - Some indication where they expect to resume service.   Unfortunately there has been no news on cruises resuming from the Port of New York and New Jersey as of today. Looking at where the Norwegian Cruise Line ships are currently located - it does not appear that resuming New York / New Jersey Cruising is not in the near future.   At this time, the Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape are located off of Singapore. The   Norwegian Joy spent some time in drydock in Singapore last week.   The Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore are located in Copenhagen, Denmark and the Norwegian Star is in Southampton, England.   Norwegian Encore One Of  Many Norwegian Cruise Lines Ships Shuffled in August In a strange move of events Norwegian Cruise Line has relocated their ships away from the United States shores in search of cheaper lay-ups and calmer weather.  On August 1st, the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Spirit departed Norfolk between 9:15 AM and 10:30 AM. The Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore headed north toward Canada to avoid a hurricane. Sailing off the coast of Aquaforte Canada, in a surprising move, the Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore headed east toward Denmark. Sailing about 2-3 nautical miles the entire crossing the ships arrived in Europe on August 12.  Today the ships are alongside in Copenhagen Denmark. Norwegian Cruise Lines Extends Pause to October 1, 2020 In a written statement, Norwegian Cruise Line has stated they have extended the pause in operations to  October 1, 2020. Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Spirit (Shown) along with the Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore will be temporarily docked in Norfolk, Virginia During last week's earning call, Norwegian Cruise Line announced that some ships would be moved to a cold lay-up status in order to reduce costs during the pause in operations. On Friday it was announced that 3 Norwegian Cruise Line ships - the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore and the newly transformed Norwegian Spirit will be laid up at Norfolk Virginia's Portsmouth Marine Terminal . The ships reportedly have only a skeleton crew of 175 each. Crew member will NOT be allowed to go ashore but the ships will have reduced fuel, staffing and upkeep costs. The trade offs - these ships will require more time to reactivate to a cruising status. Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Gem - Currently idle in Nassau, Bahamas. 3/22/20 - Although originally reported to be laid up temporarily in Jacksonville, Florida, the Norwegian Gem headed from New York directly to Nassau. As of Sunday, the Norwegian Gem remains dockside with other Norwegian Cruise Line , Seven Seas Cruise Line and Oceania Cruises ships. (all of the Norwegian Cruise Lines Family). Located in Nassau with the Norwegian Gem is the Norwegian Breakaway (another New York favorite) and Norwegian Encore (coming to New York in the summer). The Norwegian Gem was expected to sail 10 and 11 day cruises from New York before heading to Boston for Boston to Bermuda cruises in May/June. Where is the Norwegian Bliss?  The Ships are continuously moving. 3/22/20 - Although originally reported to be laid up temporarily in Norfolk, the Norwegian Bliss headed from New York directly to Nassau and then on to Miami where she is with the Norwegian Encore, Carnival Pride, MSC Armonia, MSC Seaside, MSC Divina, Explorer of the Seas, Sirena and Scarlett Lady (docked at the container terminal). MSC Mergavilla is anchored off shore. The Norwegian  Bliss will most likely move to a new destination to make room for the next ship. In general, the cruise lines have been alternating ships in ports to give crew an opportunity to go ashore and too take on supplies. The ships are continually moved and refueled.  Onboard plumbing, lighting and air-conditioning is exercised. Idle ships deteriorate more quickly so the cruise lines are keeping them moving. Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore - Sporting her hull art - the Final Breakaway Plus Ship. Norwegian Cruise Line accepted delivery of the final ship in the Breakaway / Breakaway Plus class of ships. The 6 ships were delivered over the course of 6 years. The smallest in the series - the Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway weigh in at 145,655 tons. The largest is the Norwegian Encore at 169.116 tons delivered in the fall of 2019. Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Joy to Sail From New York in 2021 Norwegian Cruise Line has announced select 2021 ship deployments. New in 2021 is that the Norwegian Joy will be based out of New York sailing to Bermuda - (Replacing the Norwegian Bliss (2020), Norwegian Encore (2019) and Norwegian Escape (2018), Norwegian Breakaway (2017 + earlier) ). The Norwegian Joy was built in 2017 specifically for the Chinese Market sailing from China. NCL decided to remove the Norwegian Joy from the Chinese Market. The Norwegian Joy underwent an Americanization removing all Chinese specific signage and amenities. Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Escape to Spend the winter tin the Western Caribbean In late November, Norwegian Cruise Line is swapping ships out of New York - Replacing the Norrwegian Escape with the newer Norwegian Bliss. There Norwegian Escape will depart New York on November 20, 2019, heading out of the Big Apple empty enroute to Miami. The Norwegian Escape will spend the winter sailing to the Western Caribbean from Miami until April, 2020.  In April the Norwegian Escape will sail back to New York for a 4 Day Bermuda Cruise on April 7, 2020 followed by a 7-Day cruise to Bermuda.
