Norwegian Cruise Line Ships Leave US Layup and Head to the Caribbean and Europe

Image
Norwegian Encore One Of  Many Norwegian Cruise Lines Ships Shuffled in August In a strange move of events Norwegian Cruise Line has relocated their ships away from the United States shores in search of cheaper lay-ups and calmer weather.  On August 1st, the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Spirit departed Norfolk between 9:15 AM and 10:30 AM. The Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore headed north toward Canada to avoid a hurricane. Sailing off the coast of Aquaforte Canada, in a surprising move, the Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore headed east toward Denmark. Sailing about 2-3 nautical miles the entire crossing the ships arrived in Europe on August 12.  Today the ships are alongside in Copenhagen Denmark. The Norwegian Spirit after departing from Norfolk immediately started sailing west toward the Mediterranean. In a surprising event, the Norwegian Dawn, which departed Miami on July 31, met the Norwegian Spirit in the Atlantic and the two ships sa...

Interesting Fact - Bermuda Denied Ship Layup in March.

Image
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Europa - One of three ships requesting temporary layup in Bermuda. At the point the cruise lines were forced to pause operations, the cruise lines were scrambling to find a temporary berths to dock their ships. Not knowing how long the pause would be and with hopes to restart cruising soon, cruise lines were looking for ports close to their normal cruising region. There are reports that around March 18th, 2020 Bermuda locked down its borders and  denied entry to three recent cruise ships that requested permission to dock. Bermuda Media reports the Bermuda Ministry of Tourism and Transport confirmed it denied requests by the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Gem, and the MS Europa. The ships were intending to ‘lay up’ with crew and medical staff only, and to date neither cruise line has had any incidents of coronavirus associated with its fleet. Today (5/25), the Norwegian Bliss sits in Norfolk; the Norwegian Gem is in the vicinity of Jacksonvi...

Norwegian Cruise Line to Lay-Up 3 Ships in Norfolk, Virginia.

Image
Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Spirit (Shown) along with the Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore will be temporarily docked in Norfolk, Virginia During last week's earning call, Norwegian Cruise Line announced that some ships would be moved to a cold lay-up status in order to reduce costs during the pause in operations. On Friday it was announced that 3 Norwegian Cruise Line ships - the Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore and the newly transformed Norwegian Spirit will be laid up at Norfolk Virginia's Portsmouth Marine Terminal . The ships reportedly have only a skeleton crew of 175 each. Crew member will NOT be allowed to go ashore but the ships will have reduced fuel, staffing and upkeep costs. The trade offs - these ships will require more time to reactivate to a cruising status. This may be a foreshadowing of the fate of the Norwegian Bliss' Alaska program; the Norwegian Spirit's Eastern European cruise program and the Norwegian Encore's 2020 New...

Where is the Norwegian Bliss?

Image
Where is the Norwegian Bliss?  The Ships are continuously moving. 3/22/20 - Although originally reported to be laid up temporarily in Norfolk, the Norwegian Bliss headed from New York directly to Nassau and then on to Miami where she is with the Norwegian Encore, Carnival Pride, MSC Armonia, MSC Seaside, MSC Divina, Explorer of the Seas, Sirena and Scarlett Lady (docked at the container terminal). MSC Mergavilla is anchored off shore. The Norwegian  Bliss will most likely move to a new destination to make room for the next ship. In general, the cruise lines have been alternating ships in ports to give crew an opportunity to go ashore and too take on supplies. The ships are continually moved and refueled.  Onboard plumbing, lighting and air-conditioning is exercised. Idle ships deteriorate more quickly so the cruise lines are keeping them moving. The Norwegian Bliss departed the Manhattan Cruise Terminal at around 6:45 PM and sailed down the Hudson River and remained idling off of Staten Island/Fort Wadsworth, just prior to the Verranzaro-Narrow Bridge. Norwegian Bliss was moved (presumably) to make way for the Norwegian Gem which is arriving Monday morning. Saturday A Quiet Port - Sunday Things Pick Up

Image
Manhattan Cruise Terminal on a busy day. - NY Economic Development Organization New York Harbor looked sad this Saturday. The temperature in New York City peaked out at 53 degrees and Sunny on Saturday 2/22/2020. People were outside enjoying the warmer weather and as I walked along the river - no cruise ships were in port. None of the busy port traffic was chris-crossing the Hudson River. Only the occasional ferry was sailing between New Jersey and New York. Missing were the excursion boats, tug traffic, yachts, pleasure craft and most of all - the cruise ships. The marine traffic was noticeably missing as the cruise ship piers remained empty. Sunday saw the arrival of the Norwegian Bliss and Anthem of the Seas. The Norwegian Bliss docked alongside pier 88 in Manhattan. The Anthem of the Seas docked in Cape Liberty, Bayonne, NJ. Both ships - surprisingly sailed on time which has been infrequent for the Norwegian Bliss. The Norwegian Bliss and Anthem of the Seas were sailing o...
