Scenic Cruise Announces The Captain Of Their First Luxury Yacht - Scenic Eclipse

Scenic announced the appointment of Captain James Griffiths as the captain of Scenic Eclipse, the world’s first Discovery Yacht, launching August 15, 2019. “Scenic Eclipse is setting an entirely new standard in the Cruise and Expedition industry,” stated Captain Griffiths, “and she is the first cruise ship to truly combine ‘go anywhere/see everything’ ability.”
Captain Griffiths comes to Scenic with an extensive background in expedition cruising, having served as expedition captain with Windstar and captain of Lindblad’s National Geographic Explorer, as well as spending 11 years with Cunard Lines. He was appointed Chief Officer at age 25 on board the RMS Queen Mary 2. In a career that has spanned nearly 20 years, Griffiths has worked on 12 different ships, commanding six of them, and visited more than 105 countries.
Griffiths was educated in the U.K. and holds multiple degrees and designations from the Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton, Middlesex University and the Nautical Institute in London, and Lloyds Maritime Academy in Kent.
Asked what he believes will be a voyage highlight for the guests and the crew, Captain Griffiths pointed out the array of possibilities. “I am genuinely excited to see how guests will react to Scenic Eclipse. She is designed to exceed expectations. Everyone will take away something different; perhaps a journey to a shipwreck in our submarine, a flight over a glacier with one of our highly trained pilots in a helicopter, maybe watching the sunrise on the bridge with one of our Deck Officers, or memories of the excellent dining venues. For my crew, I have been delighted how quick the very best people in the industry have been to join me on board Scenic Eclipse. Scenic is not your average multi-national faceless company, it really does feel like a family, so serving our guests on board a ship like Scenic Eclipse will be a career highlight for many.”
The first sailing of Scenic Eclipse will be August 15, 2019 - an Iceland & Atlantic Canada sailing from Reykjavik to Quebec, followed by sailings down the eastern seaboard of North America.
Scenic Eclipse is expected to sail from New York in the fall of 2019 for a limited number of cruises as she continues her worldwide exploration itineraries.

The Return to Cruising From New York and New Jersey Is Still TBD (To Be Determined) For months now, the cruise lines have been discussing the restart of operations.  All communications have identified the return to cruising to be primarily in Florida (Miami and Port Canaveral) and the Gulf Coast ports in Texas. There has been no mention of cruising returning from the port of New York and New Jersey. With the recent spike in coronavirus cases in Florida and the Gulf Ports. The cruise lines have turned their attention to Europe. The European Union has also put into effect a series of restrictions and guidelines cruise lines need to follow which will greatly reduce the ship's capacity and impact the onboard experience. It does not appear that New York or New Jersey is part of the phase 1 of   the initial return to service after the pause. Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 Itinerary Modified to Drop Hong Kong Calls. Singapore Stops Added.

Cunard Line' Queen Mary 2 will sail an altered itinerary in Asia. Cunard Line Queen Mary 2 left New York on January 13, 2020 as part of a 113 day World Cruise. The current segment of this cruise is approaching a planned extended stay in Hong Kong. In late January, Cunard Line announced that the call by QM2 to Hong Kong on February 18/19 will be replaced replaced with a stay in Singapore. A statement from the line read: "We are currently looking at the impact of travel restrictions due to Corona virus and our imminent ports of call in China and Hong Kong for Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth world voyages. "We have made the decision to cancel Queen Mary 2 call to Hong Kong on February 18/19 and replace it with Singapore on the same dates. Select Cruise Lines Try To Reenter Service With New Restrictions and Preventative procedures.

  German and Italian Cruise Brands start limited service - sailing short cruises restricted to domestic ports and Italian and German Nationals Select cruise lines has decided to start cruising operations outside of United States waters Norwegian cruise line - Sea Goddess has started cruises for Norwegian citizens on their private yachts - only calling at ports within Norway. Carnival Owned German cruise line Aida Kreuzfarten  is planning to start operations from German ports calling at select German cities. Royal Caribbean's jointly owned German cruise operation Mein Schiff began cruising last month - sailing short cruises to to nowhere for German nationals only. As part of the cruise, the ship sailed to the shipyard where is was built allowing passengers a view of the shipyard. Later this month Carnival Cruises' Italian brand Costa Cruises - will start sailing from Italy with 2 ships. The ships will be restricted to carry only Italian citizens and call only at Italian ports.
